We strive to identify important problems in social science that can be solved computationally and with large-scale data, and then to develop new machine learning algorithms to solve those problems. We use machine learning and text mining to discover meaningful patterns in large-scale, unstructured text and metadata from online social media. Our recent research in machine learning includes extensions of the nonparametric Bayesian topic models, and the results have been published at ICML, IJCAI, AAAI, and CIKM. Our research in computational social science has looked at problems of emotion cycles, self-disclosure behavior, and multilingualism, and the results have been published at ACL, AAAI ICWSM, and ACM Hypertext.
