Jong Cheol Park is Professor in School of Computing at KAIST, leading its Natural Language Processing & Computational Linguistics Laboratory since 1998. He received BE and MSE in Computer Engineering from Seoul National University and PhD in Computer & Information Science from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA.

He is one of the earliest researchers for BioNLP, or applications of NLP to biology and medicine. He has been working with his students on various topics in NLP, such as natural language query interpretation, emotionally appropriate speech synthesis, and identification of emotional cues and detection of symptoms of mild cognitive impairment and clinical depression from natural language text. His current research interests include BioNLP, turning text to animation and sign language expressions, and more broadly natural language information service.

He works as founding and managing Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Computing Science and Engineering since 2007. He also serves on the editorial boards of ACM Transactions on Asian and Low-resource Language Information Processing, BMC Biomedical Semantics, and so on as of 2018. He has served as local arrangements co-chair of ACL 2012, co-chair of the PC of IJCNLP 2013, chair of the PC of PACLIC 2016. He is a permanent member of Sigma Xi, KIISE and KSLI.
