Dr. Choi Jae-seung, a graduate of KAIST's Graduate School of Information Security, was appointed as an assistant professor of computer engineering at Sogang University as of September 2022. Dr. Choi Jae-seung received his doctorate in February 2022 from Professor Cha Sang-gil's software security laboratory, and later served as a senior researcher at KAIST Cyber Security Research Center. During the degree process, Dr. Choi Jae-seung conducted a study on automatically finding vulnerabilities in software, and published his thesis as the first author at ICSE and ASE, a top conference in software engineering, and S&P, a top conference in security. Dr. Choi Jae-seung will continue his research at Sogang University to find software vulnerabilities using technologies such as fuzz testing, static analysis, and symbolic execution. Dr. Jieung Kim (Master's degree at KAIST, Doctor's degree at Yale University) was appointed as an assistant professor at Inha University from September 1, 2022. After graduating from Sungkunkwan University's Department of Computer Engineering, Dr. Jieung Kim received a master's degree from KAIST's School of Computing (advisor: Seokyoung Ryu) and Ph.D. from Yale University with his thesis "Modular and Compositional Development of Certified Concurrent Software Systems". Dr. Jieung Kim worked as a research engineer at Google Korea (Google Research and Google Core ML team), and was in charge of developing a virtual machine type verification project for Andriod system, HW/SW intergration design specialized in machine learning in IoT environment, and developing library optimized for machine learning model in tensorflow. Dr. Jieung Kim will continue to develop practical formal verification methods to improve the security and saftey of software, and appy them to formal verification of OS, distributed system, blockchain, TPU accelerator compiler, and machine learning libraries.

Dr. Pilsu Jung (advisor: Sungwon Kang) was appointed as an assistant professor at Gyeongsang National University. After graduating from Chungnam National Universiy's Department of Computer Engineering, Dr. Pilsu Jung received his master's degree from KAIST School of Computing, and received his doctorate in August with research about "code-based automatic test for efficient product line regression testing" Dr. Pilsu Jung worked as a senior researcher at Samsung Electronics' Innovation Center for two years and was in charge of SSD firmware regression tests using large-scale test date. He will continue his research in data-based software quality analysis and testing, and conduct convergence research between aerospace domatins and software engineering.

The master's thesis of Hyeongyeol Ryu (advisor: Sung-Eui Yoon), a master's graduate of the School of Computing, was presented at the ICRA 2022 (IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation), the largest conference in robotics held in Philadelphia, USA from May 23 to 27. This research paper was selected for the Outstanding Navigation Award Finalist at the ICRA conference. Only 40 papers among 1500 papers from all categories presented at the conference are selected for this award. Similar to when 11 former and current members of Krafton donated for software talents training in June last year, this donation was a matching donation in which the company's contributions are added to the amount raised by the donors. The donation was initiated by Krafton engineer Sanghyun Lee (Class of '08 Bachelor, Class of '12 Master) by gathering in-house alumni who agreed with the purpose of donating for the juniors of the School of Computing as the seniors. Seven of the donors are members of '5minLab', which Krafton recently acquired, and most of them are from 'Haje', a student game developing organization at the School of Computing. Other alumni had experiences in the computer R&D student club 'Sfax' or the undergraduate student council. They participated in the donation with the desire to be helpful to juniors, recalling the good experiences of their school days. The donors thanked what they had gained from their experiences with challenging and creative people in the free environment provided by the KAIST School of Computing. They discussed the wise use of the donation so that they could develop 'Sharing Leadership' of the juniors. The School of Computing plans to use the donations for ▴Support for the Student Council and student clubs, ▴Funds designated by the School, ▴Fund for building extensions for the School, etc. In particular, this donation will be used for volunteering and donation activities with various members of the school and talent donations events led by the student council. Also, the designated funds delegated by donors are going to be used as scholarship funds for undergraduate students. Seongwon Lee participated in this donation after obtaining his Bachelor's degree in February of this year. Recalling his undergraduate life, he said, "I have a more positive mindset thanks to my colleges who had free spirits to try new things and step onto the paths I never thought of." Gunwoo Kim (Class of '15 Bachelor) said, "I made this donation with the desire to relieve the feeling of debt for the great time I pursued thanks to the good people at a good school." Haechan Lee (Class of '08 Bachelor, Class of '12 Master), who participated in the donation, said, "KAIST School of Computing provides great support for students to have various experiences. School of Computing at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) expressed its condolences over the passing of NXC Corp. director Jung-ju Kim, a Nexon founder and KAIST alumni. Director Kim obtained his master's degree in Computer Science at KAIST. In 2015, he also received the Alumni of the Year Award from KAIST College of Engineering. In a letter of condolences released on the 3rd, the School of Computing said, "the sadness from the sudden grievous news is insuppressible, but we pray for the well-being of the deceased and express sincere condolences to the bereaved family” Kim founded Nexon in December 1994 and raised it to the largest game company in Korea. Nexon's 'The Kingdoms of the Winds' is one of the world's longest-running graphic online games. Referring to his achievements, the school said, "Director Kim, through his immeasurable performance, demonstrated the true spirits of KAIST, which are challenge, creativity, and care.” The letter added, "Director Kim spared no investment for the growth of game companies, and was actively engaged in social contribution for the next generation." He financially assisted children's rehabilitation hospitals nationwide, including the opening of the Purme Foundation Nexon Children's Rehabilitation Hospital in 2016, and also launched Asia's first computer museum in Jeju Island in 2013. Uppsala University, founded in 1477, is Sweden's oldest and prestigious university. Dr. Park’s main research field is computer architecture and systems. He has published in top international venues including IEEE/ACM ISCA, MICRO, and ACM EuroSys. Dr. Sangeun Oh has worked as a research assistant professor at KAIST School of Computing for 6 months after acquiring his Ph.D. at KAIST. His main research field is mobile IoT systems, and he has published papers at ACM MobiCom, ACM MobiSys, IEEE RTSS, etc., which are the best academic conferences in the field of mobile computing and real-time systems. His research achievements were recognized for their excellence. In 2017, he was selected for Google Ph.D. Fellowship. Dr. Sungjin Kim (advisor: Prof. Brent Byunghoon Kang) was appointed to the assistant professor of the intelligent system engineering at the Cheju Halla University in September 2019. Dr. Kim received his Ph.D. degree in a paper titled “Risk Analysis Model on Malware Distribution Networks” in February 2019, and he has been researching the differences between benign and malicious networks through social network analysis techniques for finding malicious artifacts hidden on the web. The findings have been implemented and used in practice and published in Computers & Security, Computer Networks, ETRI journals, and SecureComm. Recently, he has commercialized the malware detection system using deep learning technology, and he continues to expand his research field to the IoT sensor development and the anomaly detection using deep learning on collected logs.

Elice, a programming education startup that was established by KAIST's computer science Ph.D. students, was awarded at AWS AI Startup Challenge hosted by Amazon last year and produced some 80 related talent through data science education management. Elice operates an online programming education platform to effectively manage and operate large-scale computerized education in enterprises or educational institutions. Currently, the online coding platform is provided as a major service by introducing an environment that can be coded online without separate IDE, a free-material code evaluation system that applies grading code intended by professors, a system that prevents cheating, and pair-programming. In recognition of its technical skills, it won the AWS AI Startup Challenge last year, a competition that competes with domestic startups that operate leading technologies and services in the field of artificial intelligence deep learning. In addition, it produced more than 80 talents in related fields last year through an artificial intelligence data science program that has been operating since 2017. The program's faculty consists of KAIST and some of the best scholars in the field of artificial intelligence in Korea. Demo Day, which introduces students' projects, features major Korean IT companies such as Kakao, Naver, Samsung Electronics, and LG Electronics, as well as leading startups such as Baemin, K-Mong, and Rainist. Park Jin-woo, an engineer at Samsung Electronics who participated in the program, said, "The results of students were better than I thought, and I think it would be a good opportunity for the company if it was connected to recruitment." A trainee said, "It is meaningful that we can get advice on our career path through interviews with a business executive." As of August 6, Dr. Hoon Sung Chwa (Advisor: Insik Shin) joined DGIST as an assistant professor. Professor Chwa received the BS, MS, and PhD degrees from KAIST, Daejeon, Korea, all in Computer Science, in 2009, 2011, and 2016, respectively. His PhD thesis deals with the topic of advancing multi-core scheduling for real-time embedded systems. Prior to joining DGIST, he worked as a research fellow at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA, from October 2016 to July 2018. His research interests include system design and analysis with timing guarantees and resource management in real-time embedded systems and cyber-physical systems. He published more than 15 international journals/conferences, including top conferences in the field of real-time systems (e.g., IEEE RTSS, IEEE RTAS, ACM EMSOFT, etc). Dr. Young-ki Lee graduated from our undergraduate master's doctoral program. Since 2013, he has been a professor at the University of Singapore Business School and was appointed to the Computer Engineering Department of Seoul National University this September. Professor Lee doing research in mobile and ubiquitous systems, OS support for mobile / IoT / wearable devices, large-scale data analytics and experimentation platforms, and computational social sciences and has published many papers on ACM MobiSys, ACM SenSys, ACM / IEEE IPSN, ACM UbiComp, ACM CSCW and ACM CHI, the top academic colloquium in related field. He actively conducted research in the field of computer science and medical imaging at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Postdoctoral Research Associate commencing in June 2016. Dr. Jae-Il Kim also worked at Samsung Electronics as a Senior Engineer. His major research interests are diffusion-weighted atlas construction and learning-based missing image prediction, ultrasound image fusion, and 3D foot bone modeling for foot joint analysis, and surface-based shape analysis for subcortical structures and brain ventricles.

Our very own School of Computing alumnus Jeongseop Ahn, Ph.D (class of 2015, advisor: Prof. Jaehyuk Huh), was appointed an Assistant Professor at Ajou University’s Department of Software. Dr. Ahn worked at a postdoc position in University of Michigan after graduating, and afterwards found a research job at Oracle Labs in Silicon Valley. For his Ph.D, Dr. Ahn worked on fundamental cloud computing technologies such as virtualization and convergence in computer architecture technologies. At Oracle Labs, he worked on systems for big data analysis platforms, both SW and HW. The resultant research found themselves published on top architecture conferences, including ISCA and MICRO, where Dr. Ahn published multiple papers. SoC alumnus Jae-Pil Heo, Ph.D., appointed Assistan..

Our very own School of Computing graduate Jae-Pil Heo, Ph.D. (2015, advisor: Prof. Sung-Eui Yoon) was appointed an Assistant Professor at Sungkyunkwan University. Dr. Jae-Pil Heo researched image signature compression and indexing techniques for large-scale image search, and worked as an Adobe intern, and a researcher in ETRI. Dr. Heo’s main areas of interest include: large-scale image search, scalable nearest neighbor search, compact data representation for high dimensional data collision detection, and geometric data structures and algorithms.
