This talk examines three barriers to deployment. 1. Human-to-machine communication. Encoding human intent into AI remains hard. Modularity and agentic architectures offer promising solutions. 2. Machine-to-human communication. Users must understand AI decisions. This drives research in explainable AI and training data attribution. 3. Privacy and security. Deployment in sensitive domains is blocked by PII leakage, adversarial attacks, and membership inference risks. Regulatory compliance adds further constraints. I present our recent work on these challenges. Future directions. AI research is shifting from model scaling to adaptation, personalisation, and agent-based interfaces. I conclude with a new direction - separating knowledge from intelligence in AI systems. Software engineering decoupled code from data 50 years ago. He believes trustworthiness is the last barrier to the AI productivity revolution. He researches Scalable Trustworthy AI: making AI systems reliable, explainable, and aligned with human intent at scale. He has led the Scalable Trustworthy AI (STAI) group since 2022. He moved the group from the University of T&amp;uuml;bingen to KAIST in February 2026. He was a research scientist at NAVER AI Lab for 3.5 years. He received his PhD in computer vision and machine learning at the Max-Planck Institute for Informatics in 2018, under the supervision of Bernt Schiele and Mario Fritz, with a focus on the privacy and security implications of CV and ML (Thesis). In this invited talk, I revisit the development of robot audition from the perspective of &amp;ldquo;in the wild&amp;rdquo; sensing, highlighting how auditory and multimodal perception must evolve when robots operate beyond controlled laboratory settings. The talk begins by introducing the core technologies of robot audition, including sound source localization and separation, and by discussing the fundamental challenges that arise when these techniques are deployed in real environments. Building on this foundation, I present a series of research efforts that extend robot audition toward real-world applications, such as locating humans using sound in search-and-rescue scenarios, inferring environmental and surface properties from acoustic signals, and analyzing bird songs for ecological monitoring in outdoor environments. I also discuss how the same technical principles can be extended toward human-centered interaction, particularly sign-language-based human&amp;ndash;robot interaction, where communication relies on non-verbal and multimodal signals rather than speech alone. Although these research topics address different application domains, they are unified by a common technical direction: expanding the signals, agents, and environments that intelligent systems are designed to perceive and reason about. He worked at Nippon Telegraph and Telephone as a system engineer from 1995 to 1999, at the Kitano Symbiotic Systems Project, ERATO, JST as a researcher from 1999 to 2003, and at Honda Research Institute Japan, Co., Ltd. as a principal scientist from 2003 to 2022. Currently, he is a professor at the Department of Systems and Control Engineering, School of Engineering, Institute of Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology). He concurrently served as a visiting associate professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology from 2006 to 2010, a visiting professor from 2011 to 2017, and a specially appointed professor from 2017 to 2022. He also held a concurrent position as a guest professor at Waseda University from 2011 to 2018. His research interests include artificial intelligence, robotics, signal processing, computational auditory scene analysis, multimodal integration, and robot audition. He has served as an executive board member for the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence (JSAI) from 2015 to 2016 and from 2024 to 2025, and for the Robotics Society of Japan (RSJ) from 2017 to 2018. These can range from symmetries and repetitions, to groupings and compositional structures, to invariance and equivariance under various transformations, to cycle consistency. Today, almost all supervision we provide to our models is first-order and value-driven, such as specifying desired color or semantic class for pixels, expected depth for 3D points, etc. Yet the most important visual structure is encoded in binary or multiway relations between these values --- reflecting compositional scene hierarchies or respect for geometric or physical laws. In this talk we examine a number of ways that second-order, relational supervision can be provided, from being baked into the model to contrastive learning, to consistency losses for RL. With the growth and re-emergence of AI as disruptive technology impacting human experience, I&amp;rsquo;ll discuss how investigations at my Human Communication Technologies (HCT) Lab to elevate video to be an expressive first-class citizen of media have led to new ways to refer to and interact with video that ultimately depend on exploiting AI approaches. I&amp;rsquo;ll also present machine learning implications on our explorations to create a human voice instrument using biomechanical modeling of the human body with applications in medicine, linguistics, and brain-to-speech interfaces. For discussion, I&amp;rsquo;ll reflect on the current directions of research in my lab exploring the future of human expression, learning and living in the context of this current wave of AI technologies. Is AI the end or the beginning of the next wave of human expression?</p><p>Bio: Sid Fels is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia, where he has led the Human Communication Technology Lab since 1998. He earned his PhD and MSc in Computer Science from the University of Toronto and his BASc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo.<br />He is internationally known for his work in human computer interaction, biomechanical modeling, neural networks, and interactive arts and music, with over 400 publications. He has led major interdisciplinary initiatives in Canada, including the CFI funded Institute of Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems and the NCE GRAND program, and previously served as Director of UBC&amp;rsquo;s Media and Graphics Interdisciplinary Centre. Since 2017, he has held the Dolby and Midnet Professorships in Digital Multimedia at UBC.</p>]]></description>

First, we address coupled and parameterized partial differential equations (PDEs), which arise ubiquitously in science and engineering, from multiphase flows and plasmas to climate dynamics and biological systems, yet remain relatively underexplored in learning-based frameworks. For coupled systems, we introduce and systematically investigate a design space of FNO architectures, identifying configurations that best capture interdependent physical processes. To handle parameterized dynamics, we propose a hypernetwork-based modulation approach that conditions the operator on input physical parameters, enabling flexible generalization across problem settings.</div><div style="box-sizing: initial; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; text-decoration-skip-ink: none; unicode-bidi: embed; line-height: 1.5; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: system-ui; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: -0.3px;">Second, to mitigate error accumulation during long-time rollouts, we extend FNOs to learn flow-map&amp;ndash;type operators that directly propagate solutions across larger time horizons. His research centers on scientific machine learning, with emphasis on reduced-order modeling, structure-preserving dynamics modeling, physics-informed neural networks, and neural operators. He received the NSF CAREER Award in 2024 and has served as an area chair or program committee member for leading machine learning conferences including ICML, NeurIPS, and ICLR. His work has been supported by the NSF, Sandia National Laboratories, Meta Inc., and Applied Materials. Before joining ASU, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Sandia National Laboratories. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, College Park, and his M.S. and B.S. degrees from Seoul National University.</div>]]></description>

CI/CD pipelines are composed of software artifacts, and as such, are prone to imperfections, such as noise (e.g., misleading signals from CI/CD) and waste (e.g., invocations of the pipeline that do not provide value). He leads the Software Repository Excavation and Build Engineering Labs (Software REBELs). Prior to this, he was the Canada Research Chair in software build automation and an Assistant Professor with McGill University. This type of research is particularly interesting as it requires juggling many different factors; including a) how do you fund this? b) how do you find research-worthy yet possible to deploy problems? c) how do you find appropriate commercial partners for this? d) what are the unique challenges inherent in this type of research, and e) what are the benefits / risks / disadvantages of this type of research? As part of this talk, I will share my own experience of conducting this type of research for the last 15 or so years -- across many different domains such as power management, taxi fleet management, improving indoor spaces, and improving the performance of olympic-level athletes. I will also highlight the excellent opportunities that working with Cloud technologies and IoT allows for doing this type of research. </p><p>Bio:<br />Prof. Balan is an ACM Distinguished Scientist and has worked in the area of mobile systems for over two decades. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2006 from Carnegie Mellon University under the guidance of Professor Mahadev Satyanarayanan. Over the years, Prof Balan has established a very strong reputation in the mobile systems research community with numerous publications in MobiSys, SenSys, etc. In addition, he is also very active in SIGMOBILE organised events and has served as the program chair for HotMobile 2012 and MobiSys 2019 as well as serving on the Program Committee for UbiComp, SenSys, and MobiSys. He was a co-general chair for both MobiSys 2016 and UbiComp 2018, both of which were held in Singapore and attracted record attendance levels. In addition, he also serves as the ACM SIGMOBILE Student Outreach Director and has conducted numerous student events, called ASSET, as part of this. He is an Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Pervasive and is in the top 2％ lifetime of his field according to the infamous Stanford survey.</p>]]></description>
